Title: Please help test the new release
Post by: Admin on May 03, 2007, 06:23:09 pm
Hi faithful users (;D)

I hereby invite you to beta-test the upcoming version which you can download from here: http://www.zsoft.dk/downloads/BetaDebug.rar

If you find any bugs I would really like to know, so that it can be fixed before "public release".

The changelog looks like this:

Thank you!

These comments aren't about discovered bugs - it's a far more differences about.

1. I don't really like it either, but it was requested quite a few times so I thought I'd better implant it... That is also why you still can choose to see the list the 'old fashion way' :) I may make it another option to see the icons instead of the green check-mark or the red x (as you suggest) though.

2. I'll add some feature so you can decide the background color of the different tabs...

3. Added (haven't updated the file on the server yet though).

4. Update: I've done it even though my drawings are probably not the best... (haven't updated the file on the server yet though).

5. Correct. The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG are 'virtual folders'. More information here (http://forum.zsoft.dk/index.php/topic,67.0.html).

Registered specifically to say I can't stand the icon view myself.  I agree w/ the post above though, that the icons should take the place of the green checkmarks.

Well I'll see if I can add that as an option before the final release.

Other than that I really have no complaints.   8)

I've been using ZSoft Uninstaller since you started it.  It was certainly buggy at first, but nothing bad.  I've always liked the feature of it requesting to delete the folder once you've uninstalled something.

Hi, I have used version 2.3.4 and now the 2.3.5 beta.  The beta seems to load significantly faster than 2.3.4.  The icons work fine, although I don't see any real need for them.  I'm surprised at how fast the icons load -- I assumed that the Control Panel Add/Remove applet was so slow because it had to load all the icons.  If that's not the reason, why the heck does it take 20+ seconds to load?

One very minor bug report: In the temp file finder, when sorting by the "size" column, the list is sorted alphabetically and not by actual file size.  I don't really use this feature, so it's no big deal.

Feature request: I like the idea of the "hidden" tab.  Could this be extended to multiple tabs for different categories of programs?  New installations could show up on a "newly installed" tab.  Drag & drop between tabs would be nice.  Or a tree view with folders for the categories, instead of tabs would be fine.  Just an idea.

Thanks for your hard work to make this software and offer it for free.  It is definitely a "must have" to replace the slow Control Panel.

The beta seems to load significantly faster than 2.3.4.
That must be a coincidence - the only thing changed is the addition of the icons...

The icons work fine, although I don't see any real need for them.  I'm surprised at how fast the icons load -- I assumed that the Control Panel Add/Remove applet was so slow because it had to load all the icons.  If that's not the reason, why the heck does it take 20+ seconds to load?
Well, in ZSoft Uninstaller the icons are cached... that definitely speeds up all but the first run... but I have no good reason why the add/remove applet is so slow...

One very minor bug report: In the temp file finder, when sorting by the "size" column, the list is sorted alphabetically and not by actual file size.  I don't really use this feature, so it's no big deal.
Actually it is sorted by filesize... However, I've just received a bug-report (also about the sort feature)... If you sorted while the program was still searching you could run into errors...

On the feature request... even though it's a good idea, I think I'm going to pass on it... at least for the time being... Several reasons: a) It could overwhelm new users (the interface is already pretty cluttered imo). b) I don't know how I would do it ;)

No, I tried the TMP File Searcher again.  This time I waited until it was finished, then clicked the Size column header.  It definitely does NOT sort by size.  Here is a link to a screenshot of the first part of the "sorted" list:

Aaaah.

For some reason I handcoded the decimal separator to be ',' - when it's a '.' it didn't recognize it as a number... 2.3.5.29 uploaded... Hopefully it works now ;)
Title: Re: Please help test the new release
Post by: Majomo on May 13, 2007, 11:34:54 am
- The small icons'option is very valued.

- Flags'icons give another improvement to the interface'view.

- I saw a post about the uninstall report with a good suggestion: to include in it files/folders and reg entries that were deleted and those that couldn't be deleted. It seems this is not implemented in this version yet.

Analyze feature is with a good performance like v. 2.3.4. With and without rebooting.

And without "False Positive's"... ;D
Title: Re: Please help test the new release
Post by: pantalone on May 14, 2007, 11:48:47 pm
I double-checked Explorer properties to make sure I was running 3.2.5.29 but the sort by size still doesn't work.  I think there must be another problem besides the comma separator.  Here's another link to the results:
http://home.earthlink.net/~pantalone/Clipboard01.png

Also, the program sometimes shows the "I think the <Program Name> directory might not have been deleted" message even when the directory has been deleted. It seems to pop up just before the uninstaller's final "I'm Done, Click OK" box. You might be checking for the existence of the directory before the OS has a chance to update the file system.

Neither of these is a serious problem, I just thought you might like to know.
Thanks again for your great work!

Version 2.3.5.30 uploaded... Try that one - I tried another approach :) (can you say that?)

About the "I think..." popup message... It waits for the uninstall process to finish (using 'WaitForSingleObject') - for some reason that doesn't always work - not really anything I can do about that...  I have however added a short sleep command (basically it waits for one tenth of a second before it checks if the directory still exists)... Hope that does the trick in some cases =)

Majomo => No, that haven't been added yet. Glad you like the other additions ;)

Title: Re: Please help test the new release
Post by: Majomo on May 22, 2007, 11:12:52 pm
- The application' exit in v. 2.3.5 36 is a lot of quick;

- When I change to big icons hang about with a unagreeable windows (can't it stay in old windows until loading all icons?);

- It seems that to many programs ZU found the wrong icons - it seems that it search the uninstallers'icons and don't the executable'icons (maybe the UninstallString not the DisplayIcon/Ex).

 ;)
Title: Re: Please help test the new release
Post by: Admin on May 23, 2007, 09:58:07 am
I haven't changed the exit-code so that must be a coincidence.

When it searches for icons it first looks at the "DisplayIcon" - if there is none it turns to the "UninstallString", and if it can get a icon out of that it uses a default...

About the hang... I'm probably going to add a small text like 'please stand by' or something... If the old stuff should 'stay' (and be useable) I would have to put the code over in a new thread, and I think that's overkill...

can't find the build.  Assistance please.  ;D

If you select the exe choose rightclick and choose 'properties' or something like that (probably the last one on the list), and from there go to the 'Version' tab it says 'Fileversion: 2.3.5.xx' where the xx is the build...

Anyway, I got a bug-report (hopefully the bug is now fixed) - build 41 (;)) released.

I haven't changed the exit-code so that must be a coincidence.

You are right! And it isn't a coincidence... It was a big "false positive"... ;D ;D

I thought that the "false positive" was true... I'm sad again...  :'(

it first looks at the "DisplayIcon" - if there is none it turns to the "UninstallString

Do you can to set after first looks at the "DisplayIcon" to look at the "DisplayIconEx"? Many programs have it (like Adobe Reader 7.0, Foxit Reader, WinRar) and don't have the first... I think through this the users can see more real icons.

Hi again,

Build 30 fixed the problem with sorting by file size. Yeah! The short delay also seems to help with the false "install folder not deleted" message.  (At least I haven't seen the problem since using buid 30.)

If you've just copied the executable into your install directory thats where your problem is. You need to copy the "lang" folder too. The messagebox comes up when the language file isn't up to date...

Choose Font doesn't allow changing size or the style (italic, bold, bold italic).

Don't Show Windows Updates also hides Windows Media Player and Windows Media Format Runtime entries ???.
Title: Re: Please help test the new release
Post by: Admin on June 03, 2007, 01:59:00 pm
The choose font thing is on purpose - and it is called 'choose font', not 'choose font, size & style' ;)

The windows update thing... What ZSoft Uninstaller does is that it checks if (TSAware = 1 AND Publisher = Microsoft Corporation) OR (ParentKeyName = OperatingSystem) ('TSAware', 'Publisher' and 'ParentKeyName' are values in the registry) - if it is it's counted as a windows update...
Title: Re: Please help test the new release
Post by: soyabeaner on June 03, 2007, 02:29:56 pm
Ok.  Thanks.

I just tried it out with a new software I installed (that required rebooting) and it works great (http://forum.zsoft.dk/Themes/default/images/post/thumbup.gif).

One thing I wasn't aware of was the prompt "Do you want to delete the log?" right before the uninstallation stage is done -- because there were some newly created files and registry entries I knew were Windows legit, I clicked "no" on them when asked to delete or not.  I assumed if I clicked yes on deleting the log prompt that it would just delete the entries in the log that have already been deleted.  I didn't realize it would delete the entire log itself.  At least now I know.

Update: Installed another program.  After I clicked on "yes" to delete log, the log still shows in the Analyzed Programs.  So I right-clicked on it and selected Show Recorded Info, but ZU just freezes.  I had to manually exit ZU.  Restarted ZU and saw the log was gone.

Hmm, a message box with the text '(English) The file didn't exists :/' didn't pop up?

Build 47 uploaded - it updates the list when you close the 'Analyze Installation' window.
Title: Re: Please help test the new release
Post by: soyabeaner on June 03, 2007, 07:53:49 pm
The 'file doesn't exist' did prompt, but after I clicked ok or cancel (forgot which one), it froze.  But the problem is resolved in Build 47 :).

Post by: Admin on June 03, 2007, 08:01:59 pm
Are you sure it froze? I noticed that after showing the message box I forgot to set the cursor back from the hour glass thing, so if the hour glass cursor was 'the only thing' it actually didn't freeze... Well, doesn't really matter, now that it is fixed =)

The hour glass stayed there for so long I thought it simply froze.  Yes.  It's all good now O0.

Hidden Programs

- Menu Filters > Don't show hiden 'links' uncheck this
- Installed Programs'tab: I select a program like "Test". I hide it with F2 (two times).
- Menu Settings > Edit the Hide-Filter. I have two programs to delete: "Test" and ... "Test"
- If I want to delete from Hidden Programs the app. "Test" I need to delete two programs: "Test" and ... "Test"
- If I don't want to delete I close the windows... and if I open the Hide Filter again I have four programs: "Test", "Test", "Test" and ... "Test"
- I advice you: never again open the Hide Filter'Editor. You can find more and more "Test"'programs...

When reaching the confirmation screen with the 3 checks, if I click on one of the boxes, the program I selected to uninstall loses focus; it's not highlighted anymore.  Although it's obvious, I think the user can use a little reassurance to know what was selected before uninstalling.

With each new build is it just fine to replace the current language and Uninstaller.exe files with the newer versions and that's it?

BTW, this is the first program that allows me to uninstall PC Health; I thought it wasn't possible :).

PC Health is a built-in Windows XP and ME (and probably other versions) that's composed of Start, Help and Support, and probably System Restore.  Although it looks serious, I've had no system instabilities and saved a bit of disk space at the same time 8).

Your word of approval ;D.  Not really a concern, but more of an uncertainty: other than binary registry keys, does ZU miss out on any other key and/or file changes?
Title: Re: Please help test the new release

Binary registry keys have been registered for quite some time (since 2.3)... The only thing that is not registered is changes in files... And I don't think that's ever coming...

For you to say "After much testing.. blah blah blah, here is the final version".  I agree that the latest build is extremely stable, so I'm happy w/ it as is.  Of course you're the programmer, but I'd say you could pass this one off as a final product.  I mean, you've made several changes to it since it's inception.

Hello
Thanks very much for this great program. It is really the better than I tried.
Would it be possible to add this 4 features:
-In Tab Installed programs : a column with the Install date and Time and an other with Modified date and Time
-In Tab Installed programs :It would be nice to have a option marking as old manually the new links, and not in automatic mode.
-In TMP File searcher : a right-click item to the submenu with <<Ignore this file>>. It would be usefull for any file that is in the list but not to delete (ie:  bookmarks.bak (for firefox),wpa.bak,drmvXkey.bak(Windows MediaPlayer saved licences),edb.chk (on Xp SP2 in windir/system32/catRoot2)..... )
-In TMP File searcher : Add the number of files and the total size.
It is not a bug, but I think it is safer to allow only one instance for Uninstaller.exe.

Post by: Admin on July 02, 2007, 07:18:56 pm
I am hoping to add a 'order by install time' soon (which may or may not actually be the 'last modification' time instead...)
Currently the tmp-file-finder doesn't have an ignore-list, but that is on my todo list. Then being able to right-click and say 'not this' would be great. Added to the list ;).
A 'summary' in the tmp-file-finder isn't a bad idea. Added to the list.

The manual 'mark as old' thing... I'll add it to my list, but I can't promise when it'll be done...

The 'only one instance allowed'... Probably right, but I'm not quite sure how to do that... But we'll see :)

Thanks for your suggestions!

If I hide a program I can't show it again. I haven't a right click to turn back.
Only if I delete it from the hidden file.
It should be a agreeable manner to the user that wants to change their decision...

Title: Uninstaller
Post by: WithTLC on July 17, 2007, 03:00:11 pm
I've been using the product for a while now and I love it.  It displays the list of installed programs significantly faster than anything else I've tried to date and, from everything I've seen thusfar, does a better job of getting rid of the programs you no longer want.  Great work.

One item of interest.  I downloaded and installed a program called "Streamripper".  It shows up in the program listing, but not in the list of available programs to uninstall.  Is a feature to find the program and uninstall it plausible?   I realize that without the install log, it's not an easy task to determine files and registry entries.

Thanks....again, great program.

from everything I've seen thusfar, does a better job of getting rid of the programs you no longer want.
Not unless you have analyzed the installation.
If you just use is as an alternative front-end to the add/remove applet (i.e. using the "Installed Programs"-tab) ZU just launches the programs own uninstall routine and thus does not do a better job than had you clicked 'uninstall' anywhere else.
(Okay, actually not entirely true as ZU tries to figure out where the program was installed and checks to see if that folder have been removed after the uninstall-routine should be finished, and if not, asks the user if (s)he wants to remove it, but that's it).

I downloaded and installed a program called "Streamripper".  It shows up in the program listing, but not in the list of available programs to uninstall.  Is a feature to find the program and uninstall it plausible?
In what program listing?
Anyway, if it is not in the "Installed Programs" list, and you haven't analyzed it there's not much you can do other that find the program, delete its files and then try locating and removing its items in the registry. Manually. (Don't mess with the registry unless you know what your doing though!)
(Oh, and btw, when you locate the program files (e.g. the installation dir) check the folder out and see if there are any uninstall-routine present - it may just have forgotten to add itself to the correct part of the registry)

A feature that does this for you is (to some extend) plausible, but it will never do as good a job as if you had analyzed the installation...

This is a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway:

If I 'analyze' each program I install, ZU will remove everything properly, including registry entries?  Out of curiosity, what's your recommendation for installing/uninstalling programs?

I ask, because I do this a lot.

It should ;)

What I do myself is first uninstalling the program using its own uninstall-routine and then uninstalling using the log file... I honestly don't know if it is the smartest way to do it, but that's usually the way I do it...

?

At the moment it is not a Edit feature  (and maybe no make sense to edit the log...) - it's a Tree Changes Viewer Log (a very good viewer).

Well, actually it is. Select something, press the <Delete> button on your keyboard and it goes away. When you close the form it will ask you if you want to save your changes...

Well it isn't exactly very documented either ::)

Anyway, build 61 fixes a bug and makes a backup of the logfile you're editing...

Installed Programs Tab - Open ZU > Installed tab > select on visible windows a program > digit first letter of a program - that is not on visible windows.

ZU doesn't select such first program with it letter (but can do that with the programs that are on visible windows). Only after the user scroll down over all programs the user can do that.

Note: This annoyance don't come about over others Analysed/Hidden tab's.

I'm not positive, but I believe what Majomo is trying to do/say is the following:

There is an uncommon practice used in Windows, or more specifically, Microsoft products.  If you go into say 'Windows Explorer' or 'xplorer2' or whatever you use, you can click on a scrollable list for example and type s and the words that start with s will automatically be highlighted.  You can type ser and if you have a folder called server, it will highlight that.  You can do that with several programs and it's a MAJOR time-saver, especially in the line of work I do.  That being said, I *think* that's what they are referring to, because when I try that with ZSoft, it seems to pull up any programs with that letter or set of letters in it, instead of the beginning letters.

I hope that helps.  If that is not what you were referring to Majomo, then I apologize.

1- If I have ZU opened - I close it
2- I open ZU
3- Now I select "Ad-Aware"...
(http://xs318.xs.to/xs318/07325/ZU.png) (http://xs.to)
4- I want to select ZU (e.g....); it isn't visible - but it's there...
5- I click at the keyboard key "Z"
6- The cursor doesn't go to the end of list (to select a app. that begin by "Z" )

Can you do that? I can't...

Majomo:

Ok I was right.  I tested it and confirmed if you have a z somewhere in the program's name, it will go to it.  if it begins with z, I don't think it will at present.

I just tested, and if I press for instance 'winp' on my keyboard (when in the list) it goes to the first item with these letters (at me thats 'WinPcap 4.0') - so, at least here, it goes, not only to 'w', but also skips 'Winamp (remove only)' and selects 'WinPcap 4.0'...

I hate these things... So damn hard to debug things that I can't reproduce :(

You can type ser and if you have a folder called server, it will highlight that.

You are partially right. ;) We can do that if we use the search box.

My question is slightly different. I only want to click with one letter (first letter)...

And it's all ok on analysed/hidden tabs. It isn't in programs tab... "Only after the user scroll down over all programs the user can do that."

I agree with you there.  I just the search box all the time.

To reproduce maybe you can try this: a) close ZU b) Open ZU and select a app. that is on visible windows c) press a letter (the first) from a app. that is not visible. And don't scroll down over all programs.

Build 64 uploaded.

In this build you can change the colors if the listviews to your liking, I've written the 'goto-whatever-I-type-in-the-listview' myself instead of relying on windows doing it, so now hopefully it works :) (you have 0,5 seconds to type a new letter and build a whole word/whatever to search for), and it includes a few minor updates as well...

The background color feature allows an outlook enhanced. I like it. I think even that the standard ZU'installer could bring default background colors (slight, subtle, tenuous) to the tabs.

Maybe the developer can try this: to alternate the color lines (one that is set by user, like now; the next almost blank is standard). "A blank spot".  I don't know if the final output fit well... Just an idea... :D
